Stevenson family , Alexander Lee Stevenson missing after 1910.....
« on: Friday 28 August 15 00:35 BST (UK) »
Hi I am trying to find the whereabouts of Alexander Lee Stevenson born 1869 in Inverkip Renfrewshire.
His parents were Robert Stevenson & Annie Lee.They also lived in Dunoon. I would like to know of any records for Alexander after 1910 as he appears to have vanished at that time.Alexander married Georgina Allen in Dunoon in 1891 they lived in Durban South Africa for a while but returned to Dunoon.I would appreciate any information at all. Regards Jaro

Hi Jaro ,

Did Alexander's wife die in Dunoon in 1950(born c1870) ?

National Records of Scotland has SC51/19A/1933/2
Georgina Stevenson or Allan , date 1933.
Petition under Presumption of Life Limitation (Scotland) Act 1891, to have Alexander Lee Stevenson declared dead. Presumed date of death 1 Aug 1917.

Hi Ev ,thankyou so much for that information. At least I'm obviously not alone in thinking Alexander had vanished. There must be a story there somewhere but I am never likely to know it.Regards Jaro.

Given that they have a presumed date of death you would think the record would contain a reason for that  :-\

Others on here(...Forfarian ?) will be able to tell you how to access that record but it would probably involve a visit to Edinburgh or someone working on you behalf.

Not sure how feasible that would be ?

Yes you would think so.It would  be impossible for me to get to Edinburgh as I live in Australia and my relatives and friends are all in the south of England.I would love to know what happened but at least your discovery has given me some sort of closure.I have just had a thought though - I might see if I can find anything in local papers for 1933 - you never know! If I find anything I will let you know. Regards Jane

Hi, I was looking at the lists of UK incoming passengers and there are several for Mr A Stevenson with and without his wife coming back from Durban, South Africa. They all list Mr A Stevenson & Mrs A as being Scottish. I looked at the censuses for 1901 & 1911 and it appears that around 1911 he may have been spending more time in Durban.

1901 census:
Alfred St., Dunoon, Argyll
Alex Stevenson  age 32  b 1869 Gourock,Renfrew  occ: life assurance agent
Georgina Stevenson  age 30 b 1871 Glasgow, Lanark
Margaret Stevenson  age 8 b 1893 Dunoon
Robert Stevenson age 6 b 1895 Dunoon
Annie Stevenson age 4 b 1897 Dunoon
Williamina Stevenson age 2 months b Dunoon

1911 census:
Cambridge Village, Dunoon, Argyll
Georgina Stevenson age 39  head of house  married 19 yrs  8 children 6 living  living on private means born Glasgow
Margaret Stevenson age 18 b Dunoon  daughter  occ: laundry maid
Robert Stevenson age 16 b Dunoon  son  occ: baker
Annie Stevenson age 14 b Dunoon  daughter
Williamina Stevenson age 10 b Dunoon daughter
Georgina Stevenson age 4 b Durban, South Africa  daughter
Andrew Stevenson  age 4 months b Dunoon  son

UK Incoming passengers(some of records):

arriving from Durban 14 April 1900 to London just Alexander
arriving from Durban 30 April 1901 to Southampton just Alexander
arriving from Durban 16 Nov 1906 to London Alexander, his wife and child H Stevenson age 8 b 1898 in Natal according to passenger list records
arriving from Durban 26 March 1908 just Alexander

* I also found this one which is very curious with what Ev has found.
Alex Stevenson
Scottish
occ: coal merchant
age: 69 b 1868
departed: Durban, South Africa
arrived: Southampton, England
on: 29 April 1935
ship: Kenilworth Castle
address in UK: 33 Arragon, Streatham

I do not know if he is yours but it would go some way to explain why he "vanished". Hope something may help, Kim

Thanks very much for that. You have the correct family in the census for 1901 & 1911.I dont think the Alex returning from South Africa in 1935 could be the correct Alexander, as far as i know he was not a coal merchant. However its all worth bearing in mind .This is becoming a giant jigsaw.I really appreciate all the help.regards Jaro

Hi Jaro
I’d love to know if you have found any more information about Alexander Stevenson. It’s always been a mystery as to what happened to him, and I’d love to find out more. I did a search and did find an Alexander Lee Stevenson with a birth year 1 year different to this Alexander, living in England, but the information was lost when my computer crashed and I didn’t find it again. I wondered if he had relocated to England around 1910.
Would love to hear any further information that you have.
