skinners bottom

Hoping someone can inform me how Skinners Bottom came about its name   any help appreciated,there was a famly by the name of Jackson livedvthere late 1800s

"Bottom" is fairly common in the west country denoting, I believe, a place in a valley?

Where I grew up we had a Welhay Bottom - although it was always Welly Bottom to us!

It could be that it refers to some land occupied by a family called Skinner. There were Skinners living there if you look on the opc database. The earliest reference to it on the Cornwall Record Office catalogue is 1823 and it's a lease of 2 cottages & 5 acres for the life of the son of Charles Skinner

I may be able to help with your enquiry if it is the St. Agnes one you mean. In the course of researching family history I have traced my branch of the Skinner name to this place going back to at least 1689. It's possible it is named after them (their ancestral seat!). They continued to live there until after 1881 (mentioned on the 1881 Census).

He has mentioned Skinners Bottom
as i said any Skinner info of  Skinners Bottom would be appreciated

There are hundreds of Skinners from there over the centuries. My branch lost its direct connection
with the area around 1800 when Abel, a miner, moved to Tavistock in Devon. I've traced the family line up until then - if you or your cousin can provide any family details prior to about the 1830s I can see if any of your Skinners connect up with any of mine. There was only one Skinner left there by the time of the 1911 Census. Given the length of time they lived there (at least from the early 1600s - I haven't checked for earlier records) I thihk it very likely the hamlet is named after them.

It's a hamlet near St. Agnes close to the north coast of Cornwall. I'm visiting on Thursday to look at it and at the churchyard so if RootsChat allows photos to be sent I'll do so.
