Unreadable word in baptism record
« on: Tuesday 15 September 15 13:36 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone decipher the word after Reynold in the baptism record of Jephtha.

As far as I can make out it says "bastard son of Reynold (.............) Edith Derham March 9th.
Could it be Reynold's surname? Or is Reynold the father's surname and no forename recorded?

The baptism was in 1599 (when year end was at end of March) in Bloxworth Dorset.

The father's name appears to be: Reynolde Aires

Thank you I can see Aires now, but is there an "e" on Reynold? If the e was attached, wouldn't the d join on to it, it looks like the d is the end of the word. Now I look at the squiggle after the d , I'm wondering if it could be "or". Perhaps Edith wasn't sure of the father and gave alternatives!

I agree the father's first name is Reynolde. The R, e, and y at the start of his name are not joined together either. The 'squiggle' is definitely an 'e'  :D

If you search the Dorset registers for Reynold Harris or Arris you will find several events in the neighbouring parish of Winterborne Kingston. I'm not sure that any of them are the right age to be the father of Jephtha, but I think that is probably the name.

Hi Lizzie,

I see JenB has posted as I write, but anyway I'm sticking with Reynolde.

It's pretty clearly an e and it wouldn't necessarily be a continuous flow of script.

Dorothe above isn't much different.

Thank you all again. I think now, that you're right and it is a detached e.
Now to try and search out Reynolde Aires (or similar)
