I don't think that the 171 Lever Street is my family, the names of the other children are wrong. The rest are right.

Not sure about the Harrow Road workhouse.

As in my earlier post, Annie married Andrew RUMSEY and Thomas William married Martha Rebecca STAIR.

Apart from the original marriage of David and Louisa, one of the big problems is whether or not there was a seventh child. Several records point to a William Birch born in 1876, see for instance, the reply above. However, no such birth can be found on the GRO or FreeBMD.

All their other children were registered, so I would expect this one to also be registered.

I thought I'd post just to rule out  :)

Is Louisa maiden name Jewell or Joel?

BIRCH, ANNIE  FLORENCE  mmn JOEL
GRO Reference: 1872  M Quarter in KENSINGTON  Volume 01A  Page 1

Not found a marriage with either surname  ???

Alice Emma Agnes was living in Paddington with her parents in the 1871C and again in the 1891C.

She married Robert MILLS and together they had a child Elizabeth born in 1897.

In the 1901C, Robert (58) and Alice (34) were living in Hammersmith with their child.

Robert must have died, for in 1912 Alice married Charles IZZARD.

There are several questions about Alice:

(6) where was she in 1881,
(7) when and where did she marry Robert MILLS,
(8) where was she in 1911, and
(9) when and where did she die?

I have seen the both spellings JEWELL and JOEL used consistently for many members of the family. They were largely illiterate, so were dependent on an official writing down their family name as he (or she?) heard it!
Agree that both deaths are worth investigating. And will do so.

I only found out that he was Robert, because Alice was the informant on her father's death certificate. It gave her name as MILLS and an address in Hammersmith, which allowed me to find her in the 1901 census.

I have Alice in 1871, 1891 and 1901. Not in 1881 or annoyingly 1911. Nor for that matter in 1939, though she may be dead by then.
