Jane Dempster, cant find in 1871 census

Hi everyone,
               I'm hoping someone can help me find Jane Dempster in the 1871 census, she was age 21 on her marriage certificate in June 1886. so born about 1865, in Whitehaven, Cumberland. Her Father was William Dempster (deceased) according to her marriage certificate, not sure when he died. In 1881 she was living with her step mother, Margaret Bethwaite.

Wouldn't her stepmother be Dempster if she married Jane's father?

Jane is shown as 14yrs old so perhaps born a bit later than 1865

Hmmm, if Margaret was the mother of Jane she would have given birth to her when she was 15. Also janes father william, is on janes marriage certificate as Dempster, is it possible that wasnt his actual surname ?

In 1891, Thomas Bethwaite aged 13 b Sandwith is with his Bethwaite grandfather

There is this infant death  but no death for Margaret up to 1891

You need to buy a copy of Jane's birth cert to see if she was illegitimate (unless Margaret's age is way out in 1881)

yes, the birth certificate might clear it up. looks like this branch of the tree is going to be expensive. had to buy marriage and birth certificates for most of them.

I think this is them in 1891 indexed as Beathwaite - but William Bethwaite is alive.  However - Jane married as Dempster so if she was illegitimate she has probably used her step fathers christian name but Dempster as his "surname" and shown him as deceased.   All children b Sandwith
