Names on baptism query
« on: Friday 09 October 15 15:58 BST (UK) »
Hello I have just found my g. grandfather's baptism online at St Anne's, Llandegai in 1864.

Most of the entries just have the name of "by whom the ceremony performed" but a few including mine have other names in that column with the letters Sp or is that Gp (godparents) with a not so good capital G?

Williams, Owens, Pritchard, Povall, Banks, Brown.

Sp could be short for sponsor

Might it be Sp for Sponsors?

I only suggest this because 'Sponsor' seems to be the word used in Irish Baptisms - which I have assumed meant Godparent and not thought about it any more -- but will do now!!
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Thank you for that Rosie, of course mine is the top one with the most common name and occupation   :-\ I followed that link you gave which led to another thread.  So this is correct for a boy, 2 men and 1 woman.  I can see (I think) Jane or James Williams, Elias Jones and Pheobe (???) Williams.

Can you tell you I have all the most common names in Welsh Wales marrying each other and living in the same village/s........... ::)
Williams, Owens, Pritchard, Povall, Banks, Brown.

I thought I would give the link to the other thread as Stan is always good with the 'official' descriptions  ;D

As for common names marrying each other in villages in Wales I know the feeling, I also have it in a Lancashire village to a lesser degree.  ::)

Rosie  :)
