Aberdeen/Banchory-Devenick marriage date discrepancy
« on: Tuesday 13 October 15 10:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have a marriage for my Ancestors in Banchory-Devenick which states on 11th November 1849 "James Irvine & Janet Ross both in this parish having been contracted were married " but on 3 of their children's birth records it states that they were married on the 15th December 1849 in Aberdeen.
Can anyone offer an explanation as to why the dates and parishes are different? - were they affiliated in some way?  Janet Ross was born in Nigg, Kincardine but all their children were born in Aberdeen. I have not been able to find a marriage for them on the 15th Dec 1849 in Aberdeen

Thanks
Jenny

Hi Jenny

Sometimes what people find are actually the Banns to a marriage rather than the marriage itself. You found the marriage, and have viewed the image so certainly confirms that it was the marriage then, not Banns  :-\ Odd.

Not sure what to say really.

Thanks Monica.  I have a feeling this will remain a mystery.

I did look up both days and the 11th November was a Sunday and the 15th December was a Saturday.  Do you know if marriages took place on any specific day?  Would a marriage take place on a Sunday back then?

Regards
Jenny

I think I would interpret that to mean that their banns were called on 11 November and that the clerk, when writing the record, intended to add '.... on the xxx' but because the wedding took place in Aberdeen he never actually got round to inserting the date.

I am under the impression that weddings did not take place on Sundays.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
