I must admit, the thought he might be a sailor crossed my mind, especially where he was living and the fact he can't be found in earlier censuses. It is clearly Tailor on the 1891, but if it says Sailor on Rachel Annie's baptism on 09.09.1891, I think that will show it was a mistake on the census and he could be away at sea in 1881. Still doesn't explain where he was in 1871 though!

I thought the Tailor was probably incorrect and should in fact be Sailor.

I thought I would find in in 1871 too, but he is proving a most illusive character.
