Thomas Shore b Leigh (on-Sea) 1864
« on: Sunday 18 October 15 19:21 BST (UK) »
Trying to help a friend in my adult ed class: we are trying to find her ancestor Thomas Shore who states on census returns that he was born in Leigh on Sea, Essex. Have found him in 1891 living with wife Annie Renyard and children in Southampton. Similarly he can be found same place in 1901, thereafter he disappears.

Have been going cross eyed today trying to find him in 1871 and 1881 census'.

From his wedding certificate to Annie he lists his father as James, (this is in a handwritten note from my friend, I will need to get a copy of the cert and confirm this).

If anyone has this elusive man in their tree, please share info, or if anyone willing to take up the challenge to find him in 1871 or 1881 I throw down the gauntlet  ;)

Any help much appreciated.

Annie is transcribed as Renyard on the 1888 marriage.

This looks like his death

I cannot see a birth for a Thomas Shore at the correct time at the moment.

In addition the only Thomas Shore I can see with a father James was born in Cheshire in about 1868. Hence is too young to be this Thomas Shore.

If your friend has the marriage certificate -- does it give the occupation of James (apparant father of Thomas) please? I can't find the marriage either - so I am curious to know how your friend found it.

I amended my last post as I found it with Annie transcribed as Renyard not Reynard. 1888

The marriage took place in the Lymington district in 1888.

I can't find any trace of him before his marriage, strange that he doesn't appear in the 1871 census as  a 7 year old. I wonder if he was illegitimate and took the name of Shore in later life after his mother married a James Shore?

I thought I'd found his birth as Thomas Shaw born Leigh 1864, but realised that was Leigh, Manchester!

Thank you all so much for the help.

The information that has been passed to me is what her grandaughter who is not living in England has been able to find, but there are so many missing pieces to this jig saw.

The wedding certificate shows father James Shore a Sawyer.

We have various occupations for Thomas, a Tailor in the 1891 census, a sailor, a mariner, a dock labourer and a mariner again on the baptisms of his children.
They are given as
Rachel Annie bap 09.09.1891
Ernest Charles bap 26.06.1896
Lancelot bap 17.06.1898
Margaret Pretoria bap 12.08.1900

I have been trying this morning to find out where they were christened as the notes do not give a place or parish.

The notes that have been passed to me are very sketchy (apparently this was doen by a 'paid professional'. There are no references or details.

I have been looking at other Shore/Shaw spellings and saying Leigh, Essex out loud to think what the enumerator heard, so could it have been Hadleigh, Essex etc etc  ::)

Appreciate the help given, thank you  ;)

I wonder if the 1891 entry should actually be Sailor - and the Enumerator has copied it from the Householders form incorrectly. Otherwise it's an odd change of occupation.

Also - who is Mary Ann Atkins - widow - on that census? Is she a clue? She might be worth checking backwards.

Haven't yet found a James Shore, Sawyer yet - either before or after 1864 (however I can't believe I didn't find the marriage of Thomas - must be losing it!)
