Joseph Selby and Sarah Hazard
« on: Monday 19 October 15 21:48 BST (UK) »
Hi I just visited a village here in quebec called Dunham- county brome missisquoi. They have a lake there named Lake Selby so I went to see why it was named lake selby and found out that Selby's from Nottingham england came to canada and established their lives there.I have found out that Joseph selby born about 1817 I think in Nottingham england,???as have found out they came to canada in 1822. Anyways Joseph Selby married a woman named Sarah Hazard in about 1842 in dunham, quebec and seemed to have had  so far as i have from my information 3 boys. Samuel,Jonathan and Thomas Selby. Thomas being born about 1843 and died 1911 married  Mary Ruth Gleason in about 1870 and died in 1899. I am trying to find out if Joseph Selby is from england and if there is a connection to my tree. But have to start somewhere. Thank you.

Did any of your English Selby's have a brother called Joseph born around 1817?

If they went to Canada in 1822 - he was only around 5yrs old at that time

Selby was not an uncommon surname in Notts. The 1841 census has 173 entries  and the 1851 has 194 entries who were actually born in Notts

The 1851 Canadian Census - Missisquoi County shows

Joseph Selby aged 35 years born England, wife Sarah born Canada aged 34 years, Thomas 9 years, Benjamin 6 years, Wm aged 3 years and an unnamed Selby aged 1 year.  Also listed is Hannah Selby born England and aged 70 years.

Burial of Hannah Selby (1855)  - possible mother (born about 1782)  - listed on the 1851 census above - relic of Jonathan Selby.

This christening record could be worth investigation as a possibility for Jonathan Selby  - 24 February 1788 - Sutton-upon-Trent, Nottinghamshire - Parents - Samuel Selby and Mary.
