Hi all,

Have today looked at a copy of the booklet. No mention of William's (known as John) parentage or place of birth. Resident in Lyttelton in 1864 where seems six children born with Harriet nee Walters. John died of an accident in 1872. Sometime before Nov 1878 Harriet married Winslow Morton and the family moved to Rakaia. Booklet contains stories written by descendents of some of the early settlers, excl mine, in the area. Published by Mid Canty NZSG. The author of the Mead page is named. A great granddaughter of John and Harriet.

Hi Alan,

Thanks so much for the info from the book. I do appreciate you going to the trouble of looking it up for me.

William/John Mead is proving to be a very elusive man - sounds like the family didn't know much about him either. Or Harriet for that matter, who was the daughter of a convict. I'm pretty sure she didn't marry either Mead or Morton, having already been married in Sydney in 1862. I guess I've hit another brick wall :-(

Hi KHP :)

Would you mind doing your lookup thing for the industrial schools and see if there's any mention of the MEAD/MEADE children.

Thanks
Beg

Sorry Beg, just seen this, have answered your PM.

There is this:

Industrial School Warrants

Name : MEADE Earnest
Date : 11 Feb 1875
School : Burnham
Occupation : Farmer
Guardian : Thomas AMBROSE
Address : Greendale
To remain until 11 Feb 1881
Archives reference : CW 13/1
Page : 94/95

Not sure what a look up of the Archives file for this will tell you.

The other names that appear under the Industrial School Nominal Rolls under Mead/e are for 15 October 1885 for Caversham Boys/Girls.  There is an Arthur who went to Caversham when he was 13yrs 2 mths, Religion Baptist.   Does this fit?

Thanks for the info, KHP. According to newspaper reports the other Mead/e children, James, Ada and Arthur were sent to Burnham in March 1875.

I'm not familiar with these records - what was the role of the guardian?

Cheers

Thanks again KHP :)

If the Arthur that went to Caversham was 13 in 1885 then yes it's a definite possibility.

The youngest child was an Arthur Albert MEAD born 22 Nov 1871.

And for what it's worth, BDM NZ Births doesn't have any other Arthurs of that name or age.

Can you post the CW14 reference please.

Hi again Jan...

As I understand it...

The Warrant found by KHP most likely won't tell you anything about Ernest's parents. It's more to do with the family he was fostered to once the Industrial school had given him some basic work skills.

The registering of info about the child's family didn't actually start until the Industrial Schools Act 1882 (or at least those are the only Registers to which we have access)

----

If you want to see Ernest's warrant you could start a new thread asking for a Wellington Archives look-up.

You'll want to include the following link...

Warrants issued under the Industrial Schools Act 1882 - April 1880 - April 1882
http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=4272905

... and say you'd appreciate a photo of pages 94/95, the warrant for Ernest MEADE.

---

From the NZ Archives website...

"Warrants were issued to permit children at industrial schools to board with foster parents, and they give details of child and foster parent."

Scroll down to Industrial Schools

Can you post the CW14 reference please.

Regards
Beg

There were quite a few Arthur's at the time, with no middle names, the one I posted above, more or less fitted with his DOB.  CW 14/11 is the reference.

CW 14/11 is the reference.

Ooops. Sorry :-)

Was there a page number too.

EDIT: Hmmmm...

CW14/11 is for 1894. Not sure what that's about. 1885 should be CW14/2/2
