Grimsby 1946 Obituaries
« on: Wednesday 28 October 15 19:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for a possible obituary for a death in the Grimsby area in 1946. My newspaper archive access only shows the Grimsby Daily Telegraph and those entries only go up to 1939. Any suggestions on how I can proceed further?

Contact Grimsby library. They hold most of/all the local newspapers.

Depending on how 'near' a date of death you have (presumably at least the quarter the death was registered in) they might be willing to check for free, or they might charge you.
Though obviously if you can visit the library yourself, you can look for free.  :)

Thanks for that  suggestion - I'm on the other side of the Pennines so I'll give it a go. I have the year and the quarter (and a name obviously) and I'm hoping that an obit might shed some light on an enigma.

Tks again

If you put the details of the person you are looking for I will make the necessary searches when I next go to the library

Thank you for your kind offer. Here are the details listed..

James M Hughes
birth abt 1893
death Dec 1946
Grimsby Lincs.

Any details about him and/or family would be interesting as we're trying to trace a long lost family member who it was assumed had died in the Great War. Through newspaper cuttings and medal rolls I've established that he did indeed survive though he was wounded and may have lost the sight in one eye. Prior to 1914 (and after 1911) he was working for the Great Central Railway as an assistant driver at Immingham. I can find no trace of him after that (though with a name like JM Hughes) it is no easy task.

It would be interesting to see if this fits.

Again, Many thanks

I will see what I can find on my next visit.    Bear with me I am not sure when that will be but it will be in the near future.    I take it you have no addresses in the Grimsby area,

Sorry, I've no other details. This is a bit of a stab in the dark. Ran his name through Ancestry and came up with the James M Hughes death in Grimsby and as that's close to Immingham........
Two and two may make five in this case!

Tks
