World War II Military Service Records - Abbreviation Help Needed
« on: Saturday 31 October 15 06:35 GMT (UK) »
I am having great success in deciphering my father's service records (thanks to the NZDF "Commonly Used Abbreviations) but need some help with a couple of entries.

1. Does anyone know what the 'S' in 'S' NZ Infantry Corps means?

2. I know that the abbreviation M/O usually means "marched on" (as in departure from a unit) but I have come across a couple of instances where "marched on" doesn't seem relevant as it is preceded by "on" e.g. "CTBA to 2 NZ Rec Dep on M/O att. FAP to ..........".
(M/O is the only abbreviation I'm not sure of here). Could it possibly mean on military orders?
Thanks for any help.

Hi Khyber,

S might mean Staff, referring to the command section of a large unit or Corps.

MO could be a common contraction of Medical Officer.

Hope this helps.

I'll move this topic to the general New Zealand Board in case others can offer more advice.

In UK Army they have  Command Secretariat abbreviated to Comm Sec.   Could S  therefore be Secretariat,  otherwise admin or Clerks?

It might not help but in the cryptic crossword world "MO' always means doctor, and vice versa.

Thanks to everyone for your interest in my questions.

1.   I think it is likely that the  ”S” has something to do with staff or secretariat as he did have administration  duties at one stage when attached to the Medical Corps.

2.   As the M/O is preceded by ‘on’ my first thought when coming across it was that it could be ‘on Medical  Orders’ as it was used in relation to a new attachment after being discharged from hospital.  Has anyone come across that in service records?

Thanks again for your help.
