Cumberland, where to start looking?
« on: Saturday 31 October 15 10:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I have my ancestor William Brown living in Liverpool aged 36 in the 1851 census.

His places of birth are given thus in the various censuses

1851  Cumberland
1861  Whitehaven, Cumberland
1871  Dacre, Cumberland
1881  Dacre, Cumberland

He died in 1886 so no further census information.

I am speculating that the last 2 are correct and Dacre is his birthplace but why would he say Whitehaven?  I've checked a map and they are nowhere near each other.

The name is so common I need to be sure....... ::)

Williams, Owens, Pritchard, Povall, Banks, Brown.

It looks likely that William Brown, father William married Ellen Hale, father William 5 Sep 1842
Walton On The Hill, Lancaster.

If so William Brown may have been Baptised. 27 January 1814 DACRE, CUMBERLAND
Father:William Brown Mother:Mary

But it will need to be checked out.

Colin

Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Yes Col that's him marrying Ellen Hale

I saw that baptism on the IGI but neither Anc nor FindMyPast appear to have any parish registers for Cumberland :(

I wonder if the local family history society has records or else its a trip to the record office, do you know the location of records?

Links to the various records offices are given on this page - an email to one of them is very cheap.

Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Thank you so much Westlass off for a scout on Anc now.  I went to the Card Catalogue and used the keyword Cumberland but it came up with zero hits.......I'll be back if I can't find what you did.  ;D
