Holy Cross Cemetry Philadelphia.
« on: Tuesday 10 November 15 23:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am a newbee here and not too sure what to ask. Basically we have been trying to locate the grave of my grandfather ( Robert Grady ) in Philadelphia. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1929 from Ireland. We ave been succsessful in tracing some of his movements while he was there. Recently we have managed to obtain a Death Certificate for him. It states that he died on July 10th 1940 and was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Philadelphia on July 13th 1940. We have written to the office at Holy Cross Cemetery but we reckon that a reply might take some time. Online searches don't offer much in return and besides making contact by phone (my Irish accent would crack them up) I am just wondering if there is any other way to fast track finding a resolution. It's on my bucket list to go to the U.S. in the next year or so and I would love to see Philly and hopefully the area/plot/spot where he is buried. Living in hope. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance .... Michael O'Grady.

The county name looks like Del, which would be an abbreviation for Delaware.  That's where the cemetery that aghadowey mentioned is, so sounds like the right one.

Hi again,
Sorry for being such a pain but we have got some news from The Catholic Cemetries

"We received your request looking for your grandfather Robert Grady. I would like to inform you that we did locate your grandfather in Holy Cross Cemetery. He was interred in Section:60 Range:8 Lot:5. I would also like to inform you that it was a donation grave, therefor it is an unmarked grave and we do not allow markers.
Holy Cross Cemetery is located at 626 Baily Rd. Yeadon, Delaware County. PA 19050.
"

Can anyone tell me if a donated grave is otherwise known as a "Pauper Grave" (from the city or state) or could it be a grave that was donated by another family. It's probably the former but I have to ask. Thanks again for the info to date. It's appreciated ...... Michael

Modified. I have done some more searching and I think I might have come across what "donation grave" means. Unclaimed Dead is probably the explanation and in our case it's probably the case. However I stand to be corrected and any information would be appreciated. Thanks again .... Michael.
