Musson - Riley marriage
« on: Tuesday 17 November 15 13:45 GMT (UK) »
Still having problems with finding a marriage in Leicestershire for Alfred MUSSON and Jane RILEY.
Have birth certificate for Jane, b. Leicester, 1847. Can find her in every census from 1851 to 1901. She is with Alfred, given as wife in 1871 & 1881 census.
Have my grandfather's birth certificate it gives father as Alfred and mother as Jane RILEY.
Have found a marriage about the right time and place for Jane RILEY to E. WALKER, married 1871, Leicester. They had many children in the 1870s and 1880s, so this can't be the Jane I am looking for.
Have found Alfred in the census all records 1841 to 1891 living in Loughborough. He died 1900. Have a marriage certificate for Alfred MUSSON, 1874, Leicester, married to M BAINES. Certain this is not my great grandfather, wrong time, wrong place.
Anyone any ideas, theories or explanations  ???
I suppose there is a chance they never married, also a chance Jane was a Catholic.
Any help appreciated.
Interested in MUSSON and KNOWLES surnames mainly in Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Lancashire. LAKIN and BURROWS surnames mainly in Staffordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire and Derbyshire. RILEY surname in Leicestershire. FLETCHER surname in Derbyshire. Very interested in the DUDLEY surname.

You don't give any birthyear for your grandfather

If Jane was previously married - any marriage to Alfred would be under her married name

However - the birth certs of any Musson children would show her birth surname - see example below

Jane Riley marries Joe Bloggs who then died
Jane Bloggs marries Alfred Musson
Childrens birth certs will show mothers maiden name as Riley

Alternatively - they never married

1871 shows Alfred and Jane with 1yr old son - mistranscribed as Jopesson so any "marriage" pre-1871

Alfred was around 12/13yrs older than Jane and in 1861 he was unmarried and living with parents

The only Jane Riley I can see in Leic is with her parents Philip and Fanny in St Margaret in 1851, and with the widowed Fanny in 1861. Do you think this is her? Because if it is, there's something fishy -- as in 1871 she's still with Frances, listed under Ryley.  (despite Alfred having his wife Jane with him in Loughborough at the same time).

If this isn't her, then where is she in 1851/61?

Edited to add -- this must be the Jane who m Edward Walker as there is a 6/12 old Edward Walker Riley in the household in 1871.

So where is your Jane in 1851/61?

John Musson was 1 year old in the 1871 census. I can't see a John Musson b in Leic on free BMD in 1869-70.

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/5 - lots of unregistered births prior to then

Thank you CaroleW,
My grandfather was born in Loughborough in 1887. If she was married previously, the only Jane RILEY I can find in the right time frame is the marriage to E WALKER. I also followed the BAINES marriage using that theory. Unfortunately I think your alternative theory is looking more likely. The Jopessons are the correct Alfred and Jane.
Thank you Annie65115,
Yes this is her and yes very fishy :) It says Mary Jane RILEY on my grandfathers birth certificate. Jane does seem to have had a younger sister Mary in the census records. I am wondering if this might be who I am looking for.
Thank you tazzie,
The Alfred John, baptised in Loughborough 1869, is the John in 1871 census. He appears as Alfred John in later censuses and died in 1926.
Thanks all, I am very perplexed with this problem

Have found a marriage about the right time and place for Jane RILEY to E. WALKER, married 1871, Leicester. They had many children in the 1870s and 1880s, so this can't be the Jane I am looking for.

Jane Riley, 24, Father: Philip Riley, Labourer
