Bampton marriages completed
« on: Saturday 21 November 15 07:55 GMT (UK) »
Would any kind person have access to Bampton marriages?
I am looking for the marriage of John Collis to "Elizabeth"
Their children were baptised in Bampton from 1806 to 1822
So I am hoping this is where they may of married.
Cannot find anything on-line only lots of "trees" have John Collis marrying Elizabeth Wheeler on March 24th 1796 in St Giles Church Oxfordshire but this would only make them 15 and 16 years old. Does this seem feasible? Especially when children start to come along 10 years later ?

Also on the 1851 census Elizabeth's birth place is given as Tera Oxfordshire
John born 1781 Bampton
Elizabeth 1780 Tera
Any idea's where this is?
Many thanks in advance

Hi LMFAO,

I've had a look in the transcripts (ex OFHS) for Bampton and Aston Bampton and sorry to say cannot find any marriage for John Collis.

I did find a bapt. for John 18-11-1781 s.o William & Ann of Aston. I presume you already have this entry.

I think the place name could start with an L comparing it to Ag Lab on same page.

Le....then possibly r  (it would help if there was not a splodge on the possible r )

Could it be Lew  :-\

I'm wondering if the mysterious 'Tera' could be Lew which is the neighbouring parish to the north of Bampton.

Just going to check the census now.

............ but first I checked the OFHS Marriage Index CD and found this:

John COLLIS and Elizabeth CLARK (w), 23 October 1804, at Shifford.

Shifford (now called Bampton Aston with Shifford) is Bampton's neighbour to the east.  Hold on a minute while I get the right CD.

The OFHS CD WIT-03 confirms the marriage at Shifford.  Bride and groom were both 'of the parish'.  As usual for that period, occupations and fathers' names were not recorded.  The only witness named was Wm COOK who witnessed several other marriages, so may have been a church officer.

Hope this helps,
Carol

Thank you Alan and Rosie for your help and Carol many thanks for the marriage. That does seem much more likely than the marriage in 1796. I would never have worked out Tera was Lew!! Great detective work.
Can I just ask does the "w" after Elizabeth Clark mean she was a widow?
I really appreciate all of your help.
Lyn

Hi Lyn :)

Yes, it's the standard abbreviation for 'widow' in marriage records.

Happy to help,
