Wilfred James Gliddon

Hoping someone may be able to fill in the details of the birth of Wilfred James Gliddon, born Elkhorn, Manitoba and dying on the 12 March 2008 in Vancouver. Married Esther after service with the RCAF in WW11 and winning the DFC. Would be great to link him with other Gliddons in my data. Willing to assist anyone needing NZ data.

Hi,

Winnipeg Free Press Aug 20 1943 has a short note saying that Pilot Officer Wilfred Gliddon has arrived overseas.  He is the nephew of Mrs W H Lemon of C Gaspe annex (I don't know what that means ).  Son of Mr and Mrs E W Gliddon of The Pas, Man.  He enlisted with the RCAF in March 1942 and graduated in June 1942 in Edmonton, as a bombardier.    Before enlisting he worked at the Royal Bank in The Pas.

The 1943 article says his father was E W Gliddon... but he was really Russell Wilfred Gliddon.  His obituary is in the Winnipeg Free Press, March 14, 1978. 

He died march 13th at Deer Lodge Hospital.  He was 88.  Address 415 Charles St.  Husband of Annie. Interment Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.  He was born in Fullerton, Ontario.  Had lived in Winnipeg for 30 years. Employed at Marshall Wells.  Was in WW1 in the Royal Winnipeg Horse Artillery.  Leaves 2 sons - Wilfred (and daughter in law E) of Thunder Bay, Jack (and daughter in law B) of Winnipeg ; and 2 daughters - Mrs E Slade of Surrey BC, and E and son in law Bruce Kidd of Chippewa BC.  12 grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his brothers and a sister (not named)

1921 census, Russell and Anne are in Elkhorn.  No kids listed with them, so it looks like they were all born after 1921.  Russell is indexed as Ross on A***.  He is 30, born in Ontario.   Anne is 21 and born in Scotland. She arrived in Canada in 1914.  Russell's mother Mary is with them.  She is born in Ontario and is 68.

Taking Russell's birthdate from his military record (sept 28 1889), this would be him with his family in Brandon Man in 1901.

His father is David Gliddon, born England in 1837.  Mother is Maryann.  4 siblings.  Looks like Russell Wilfred is Wilfred Russell here.
