He has a 'Hackle' (usually feathers) at the rear of his beret .......... I would suggest that you google for this to see what turns up.

Hello everyone.
My dad was in the Black Watch and he has a bonnet like the one in the picture and it has a red hackle on it to.
He was in Palestine so wore the khaki shirt. So may be something to think about.
Broadhurst Shropshire, Parker Shropshire, Brown Cheadle Cheshire, Adshead Gatley Cheshire, Cheadle Cheshire.
