Hume of Greenlaw/Greenknowe/Stichill
« on: Friday 27 November 15 02:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi All, brand new member here... I have tracked my Hume family ancestors from St Giles, Cripplegate in London to Greenlaw and now to Greenknowe and Stichill. Does anyone have any knowledge of the family in this area between c1750-1790? I have found the birth record of Thomas Hume baptised at Stichill 26 October 1748 , son of John Hume, tenant of Greenknowe. This Thomas Hume m. Janet Coltherd in 1779 in Greenlaw and their son George b 1779 in Greenlaw also. He became a very successful brewer and was invited to London to oversea brewing of scottish ale in a London brewery. Can anyone help me uncover their story please?

Hello,
I realise this is a long shot, but I just discovered your post about the Hume family of Greenlaw. I've been trying to trace the family through Walter Hume, the brother of George. Please could you give me some more information about George? How did you manage to trace him from London to Greenlaw?
I'm also interested to know more about his career in brewing.

Hope that you see this. I realise that your post is almost 9 years old!  :)

You can find Scottish Records on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk free to search, small fee to see original records.

There are 53 Hume births/baptisms listed in Berwickshire, 1750 – 1790. There are 261 with the surname Home.

However Stichill is in Roxburghshire, GENUKI below.

"STITCHEL and HUME, an united parish in the district of the Merse, on the mutual border of Roxburghshire and Berwickshire. Stitchel is in Roxburghshire, and Hume is in Berwickshire; they were united in 1640; and each contains a village of its own name. The united parish is bounded by Gordon, Greenlaw, Eccles, Ednam, Nenthorn, and Earlston. Its length from north to south is between 5 and 6 miles; and its breadth is between 3 and 4 miles."

Thank you. I've done a lot of research already at Scotland's People. I've just hit a bit of a brick wall at George.

Sorry PMcK, my reply was to proberton, which I had not noticed was nearly 9 years old.
When were the Walter and George you mentioned born?

No problem!  Walter was baptised in 1781 and George in 1779, both at Greenlaw, Berwickshire, Scotland.

Hi Colin, yes that's them. I think Thomas's father is probably called George but a few Ancestry users seem to think his name was John.
I'm really interested in George's brewing career that proberton mentioned as it would help connect to another family member.

Tree and record on Ancestry.
Thomas Hume Baptism Date
26 Oct 1748 Baptism Place
Gordon, Berwickshire, Scotland
Father John Hume

Above not on SP, only record there that year but no Thomas there +/- 10 years..
ALEXANDER HUME 15/05/1748 GORDON
Father GEORGE HUME.

I agree I also think the father of George was more likely to be George.

I wonder if below is Janet?

JANET COLTHERD 19/06/1753 GRAITNEY OR GRETNA
Father WALTER COLTHERD
