For those who haven't seen this picture, here is Margaret Armstrong, Duncan Scott's wife. She was reportedly born in about 1827 in Glenarm, County Antrim.

Great photograph. There are no Armstrong recorded in Glenarm in the civil parish of Tickmacrevan Co Antrim in 1832 see http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/antrim/tithe-applotments/tickmacrevan-parish.php#.VmKRa0vBEYV
There are no Armstrong recorded in Glenarm in the civil parish of Tickmacrevan Co Antrim in 1861 see http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation
However Glenarm can also mean Glenarm Upper and Glenarm Lower Barony when searched on askaboutireland still didn’t produce any Armstrong which I can hardly believe. If you are interested further the Glens of Antrim historical Society might be useful to you, and they in turn in your knowledge and the photograph see http://antrimhistory.net

Below is a photo of Elizabeth (Bessie) Scott Graham's family in 1917. Duncan Scott was her grandfather, and Maggie Scott her mother. They lived in Dublin, fairly near to Kilkeel, until 1940, when they followed their daughter to England on retiring.

Whereas (I believe) 10 of Maggie's 11 children survived to adulthood, Bessie was not so fortunate. Only 2 of her 10 children outlived her. Three of four twins died very young (the only survivor was my father, the baby in the photo), another daughter died very young, a son died at 9, another in his twenties, and two more in their thirties, far away in Africa. And yet Bessie still had 10 grandchildren, after all that...

At the time of the photo, most of the tragedy is still ahead. She's just lost a twin, and two children previously - and worse is to come - but already she looks terribly sad.

It seems there was a tendency for twins among Maggie's children, and I wonder if this came from Duncan and his wife Margaret, or from the Graham side? (Having asked the question, I see that Duncan's son James was a twin).

Here is a picture of a boat(s) which "may have been" built by Duncan Scott. The caption doesn't make it clear how many of these boats were built by him, when, or which Duncan it was.

I have arranged for an mtDna test for one of my cousins. This test traces the maternal line, which in her case, runs all the way back to Duncan Scott's wife, Margaret Armstrong.

While the test can uncover very deep connections, potentially several generations even further back, the results will depend on who else has done tests, and how easy it is to pin down where any connection comes from.

So I'm not holding my breath (and it will take 2 months until we have results, anyway), but I think DNA gives us the best potential to find out more about Margaret's origins.

If any Scott descendants are descended on the male line (ie they have an unbroken string of male ancestors back to Duncan) we could do the same on the male side, which might help us dig into our Scottish past. Based on the family details in Winnifred Pierce's book, I think our only hope is descendants of John Scott (b1852), but the book doesn't give enough detail to trace them.
