Anyone collecting data for persons on ships/service in Merchant Navy
« on: Sunday 06 December 15 02:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,

The question may have been asked before but I apologise if so as I haven't seen it?

I have my father's Merchant Service "Log Book" 1936 - 1941 with dates, names of ships he served on & areas sailed from/to.

Not a lot of info. but may be of interest to someone collecting/having an interest in such which I am willing to share.

That is kind of you.

Which ports did he mostly visit, can you notice, please?

Was he on a regular run, such as Liverpool to New York?

Did he stay with one shipping company or Line?

Hi SB,

1.
Ports varied but there is a heading "Description of voyage" which only states either "Foreign" (no countries given), “HT” or "RA" although I don't know what "RA" stands for?

2.
This doesn't state where in the world he was although I know from my father's tales when I was young that he visited many countries.

3.
Unfortunately I don't see the name of any Shipping Co./Line written in the Log Book.

I am typing up all the info. from the book to add to my Family Tree & after I have it all in front of me with Ship names & dates, I will "google" each ship to find this information as well as extra info. to add as I will be able to copy & paste as I go.

EDIT

Ship names & Ports Registered (E – Engaged, D – Discharged) are;

SS Sapphire – Glasgow (E – Ayr, D – Ayr) - HT
SS Oder – Leith (E – Glasgow, D – Glasgow) - RA
SS Moidart – Cardiff (E – Alloa, D – South Shields) - HT
SS Nugget – Glasgow (E – Ayr, D – Irvine) - HT
SS San Ambrosio – London (E – Ardrossan, D – North Shields) - Foreign
SS Baron Elgin – Ardrossan – (E – Glasgow, D – Sunderland) - Foreign
SS Sinasta – Glasgow – (E – states “Mobile”, D – Immingham) - Foreign
SS British Scout – Swansea – (E – Grangemouth, D – Grangemouth) - Foreign
SS Lissa – Glasgow – (E – Irvine, D – London) - RA
SS Runa – Glasgow – (E – Glasgow, D – London) - RA
SS Coracero – Glasgow – (E – Avonmouth, D – Cardiff) - Foreign

Here's a starter for you!
'SS Moidart' (1,262t) steamer, London to Newcastle was also sunk by a mine off Harwich.

SS Sam Ambrosio was owed by The Eagle Oil & Shipping Company.

Thanks KG,

I will have to type everything up with dates then add the extra on word 1st as it's easier to copy & paste as my tree is on a different comp with no internet (won't recognise my dongle).
I only have 1 usb port on here with a mouse & dongle attached so will have to transfer it all via usb stick as I'm having problems staying connected to net (keeps cutting out)

Spent £50 2 weeks ago to have it fixed & has come back worse than it was  ???

Annie

P.S. Many years ago when my Father was living, I did copy info. & photo's of the ships, printed them off, gave him them & he was thrilled but.............was on my old comp (long gone) & long before I had FTM & back in the day when it was Floppy Discs & I may have thrown them out by mistake although the info. may still be on a floppy? My trouble then was not writing down everything on them on the small bit of paper attached as there was never enough room...duh
