Hello,
Are there any relatives to 3rd Earl Stanhope, Charles Stanhope (1753 - 1816) in this forum?  It's believed my great (x3) grandfather was his illegitimate son, William Allin.  I have no written proof per se (i'm not certain there would be any) except for an accepted oral history and the fact his son Phillip, as his only male heir, paid for William to emigrate to New Zealand in 1841.  The family seat was at Chevening in Sevenoaks.

I'm not doubting your aural history at all here, but could it be that this is a memory muddle? There was a ship called the Earl Stanhope which docked at New Zealand in 1841- taking early settlers I believe. ( not sure if they'd come from England or NSW).

Otherwise how old was William, was he from Kent? Do you have his baptism?
btw Chevening is not "in" Sevenoaks, its a nearby but entirely separate Parish.

Hi alunno-a,

Thanks for your interest.  The family history is accessible online as there has been a book published in 2005 with more detailed and accurate research.  I realise I was fairly general in my post as my intent was to connect with other descendants.
William arrived on the 'Amelia Thompson'.
