Auckland Hospital Address

Hello All,

I am getting to the nit picking stage now.

In 1906, or thereabouts, what was the street address of Auckland Hospital. I do not need the actual number of the street, - actually a suburb would be fine.

I am trying to make my stories more informative - Auckland Hospital, Auckland - is just not enough

My husband is a born and bred Aucklander and he thinks Auckland Hospital has always occupied the present site, i.e. Park Road, Grafton.

He may stand corrected.........

Hubby remembers the place very well, being a patient there in isolation as a small child.    Even then, parts of the hospital were very old.

Hello Jean.

My first reaction was you could add Central Auckland, if you choose to be precise, but then when I looked at the old maps, even back in the 1880's it was just over the border in the suburb of Parnell.

Auckland Central Library has an 1887 map [Maps on Line 2660] showing Auckland Central and Parnell marked out, within their demarcation lines, and with Park Road and a notation of HOSPITAL RES: on the fringe of the large Auckland Domain which is now home to the War Memorial Museum.

Originally a deep gully separated the two areas, but the Grafton Road bridge put an end to that separation.

I'll attach a c2000 [?] Auckland Hospital campus plan I have in my files. I remember going there in my youth, when my Grand Mother travelled up to Auckland for radiation treatment, before we had such facilities here in the Waikato.

Clearly seen on the on line maps of the large international provider.

Auckland Hospital, Park Road, Grafton reads much better than Auckland Hospital, Auckland

Christchurch Hospital is on Riccarton Avenue and has been rebuilt over the years, and now they are starting again. A relation was a nurse there in the 1970's and the ward she was in was one of the original - very high ceilings and brick work and radiators.

I am also thinking about using Public in the title. Perhaps it is a sign of my upbringing that people said they went to "Public" rather than "Lewisham" or "St Georges". I am sure the subtle meaning was I had to go Public as I could not afford ....

Hi Jean,

Not sure when "Public" was added to the title but in the early days and including around 1906, it was referred to as the Auckland Hospital. [According to 'Papers Past'.]
