Mystery Family and Marriage
« on: Sunday 13 December 15 13:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
My distant second cousin was a Patience Edith Foster, born in Cheshire in 1891. She moved to Liverpool and married a Joseph S Rock-Johnson in 1918. She later remarried as Foster-Rock-Johnson in 1943.
Despite this being a really unusual surname, I cannot find any trace whatsoever of the Rock-Johnson family. Any ideas?
Regards,
Paul

Hi Paul,

More than likely it was not hyphenated i.e. under Johnson but you may need the variants option for the surname?

Annie
South Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland:- Bowie, Campbell, Cumming, Currie

Ireland:- Cullen, Flannigan (Derry), Donahoe/Donaghue (variants) (Cork), McCrate (Tipperary), Mellon, Tol(l)and (Donegal & Tyrone)

Newcastle-on-Tyne/Durham (Northumberland):- Harrison, Jude, Kemp, Lunn, Mellon, Robson, Stirling

Kettering, Northampton:- MacKinnon

Canada:- Callaghan, Cumming, MacPhee

The marriage certificate would prove very useful, I think?
Because it will have his age, and his father's name.

But a possibility (to bear in mind!):
Births, June qtr 1900
Dudley Registration District     vol 6c, page 26

Rock, Joseph Seymour

The hyphenated surname might be explained by an illegitimate birth?
There are a plethora of Joseph Johnson births - you really need his father's name to trace any further.

Joseph Seymour Rock is with his family Joseph & Annie in the census, his mother looks to have died as Annie Rock, so no remarriage either.

Have you looked at the 1939 Register?

You have to consider this first marriage is WW1 - Joseph could have been a soldier / sailor from a number of countries - Liverpool was very busy with Military passing through - especially Sailors / Merchant Seamen
I have to say on this occasion the marriage cert in 1918 is a must

Have you looked at the 1939 Register?

The 1939 Register has the following interesting entries:
