Mary Ann ATKIN born in Sleaford, Lincs about 1844
« on: Wednesday 16 December 15 05:44 GMT (UK) »
In the 1871 census, Mary Ann FINDLEY (nee ATKIN) gives her age as 28 and her birthplace as Sleaford.
I haven't been able to find either a birth registration or a baptism in Sleaford for her (1843 or 1844).
She married William Findley in 1863 and her father's name was given as Henry Martin ATKIN.
I am trying to find her mother's name, and then her parents' marriage.
Would there perhaps be parish records which have not been made available on the internet?
Thanks for any suggestions

The birth of a Mary Ann Atkin was registered in Sleaford in Apr-Jun 1841.

According to Free Reg Mary Ann Atkin, Bastard child on Ann Atkin, was baptised in Helpringham on 6 Jun 1841.

Have you found your Mary Ann in 1851? Could the father named on her marriage certificate be a fiction?

This one was in Helpringham in 1841 census.

Many thanks for your replies. The birth year for that Mary Ann is a couple of years too early, as I am looking at 1843 or 1844 (dates which correspond to age in 1871, and also on death cert.)

Of course, it said she was of "Full age" in 1863 when she married so ...  :-\

Yes, that's correct of course.
There are several Mary Ann Atkins registered in other districts of Lincs in 1843/4, so I will investigate those too. I just thought there might be some Sleaford records not yet included in the searchable info on Ancestry, Familysearch etc. Will keep looking!

Have you found her in 1851 or 1861?. I am of them opinion that details of date and place of birth are likely to be more accurate nearer the event and particularly if provided by the parents. Might she have trimmed a couple of years off her age to more closely match that of her spouse?

Have you found Henry Martin Atkin on any record?.Is it possible that Mary Ann was illegitimate and that her father was Henry Martin? When asked her father's name she gave this and the clerk assumed these were personal names and added Atkin? I must say I find the name Henry Martin Atkin suspect.
