Peter CHALMERS, Kirkcaldy - Help with Residence Please
« on: Friday 18 December 15 20:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm trying to decipher the place name where Peter Chalmers lived at the time of his marriage in 1864. I think it is Bals??ney Lodge, Kirkcaldy.  I can't find any reference to the place elsewhere and would be interested in any suggestions.
Thanks
Sarah

At a first glance I would say 'Balsmoney' or 'Balomoney'.

It may be worth asking Scotlands People for a clearer scan - I believe they are quite amenable to this as some scans are not great. Although I remember being told once that you can enhance the image on the website - may be worth trying that.

ADDED: There's a 25 inch to the mile OS map from 1890s here:
http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=56.1139&lon=-3.1648&layers=168
but obviously not all the big houses are named - I should think a house called a lodge would stand on its own.

Had a quick look at 1861 census on Ancestry and it is transcribed as Balsueny might be better to check original one on S P

There's a Balsusney Road in Kirkcaldy so that sounds the best line of enquiry.
Thanks a lot.

Defo - well spotted. It's just NE of the cemetery on the old map I linked to. There are a few big villas which might have been called a Lodge.

Ah - now I see a Balusney House, somewhat larger now

Thanks for maps. Makes more sense now. There's a lodge marked on opp side of the road to Balsusney House, which seems to be where the Art Gallery and Museum are situated today.
