Looking for Captain Shepherd's Widow ***Completed Thank you***
« on: Sunday 20 December 15 11:03 GMT (UK) »
David Shepherd, born on 8 January 1844 in Forfar, Scotland, son of William Shepherd and Mary Miller. He became a master mariner, and later grew sugar and coconuts in the New Hebrides. He died in Paddington on 20 April 1914 and is buried in Waverley Cemetery. I have lots of information (much of it from Trove) about David, but am now curious to know about his wife.

She was born Margaret Doig in Tannadice, Scotland, daughter of Alexander Doig and Margaret Kidd, and married David Shepherd in 1873 in Forfar. They supposedly had one daughter, Margaret, born about 1876, no idea where but not in Scotland.

David's brief obituary said that he left a widow and daughter in the New Hebrides.

I note the death in the New South Wales BMD registers of Margaret Shepherd, daughter of Alexander and Margaret, in 1927, but I cannot find anything in Trove to tell me whether she was the wife of David Shepherd.

Can anyone point me at any source (e.g. a burial record or an announcement I have missed) that would enable me to be sure I have the right person before I contemplate jumping through all the hoops apparently required to get a copy of the certificate from 12,000 miles away?

No hoops here  :D  Transcription agents will transcribe the certificate and email it to you:

Apart from details of death and burial, the death certificate should give place of birth,  place of marriage, spouse's name, any issue of the marriage and names of parents including mother's maiden surname.  Bearing in mind that all this info was given by someone else so sometimes it is a little creative.

Thank you both, that is great help.I can even see why my search in Trove failed because I included either 'David' or 'Captain' and the actual notice contains neither of those. Very much appreciated.

Thank you for the cemetery information, Cando. Especially glad to have the extra details about the daughter Margaret.

Thank you, Ros, for the kind offer, that would be great. I will send you a PM with my e-mail address.
