Surgeon to the garrison
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 13:07 GMT (UK) »
I've just found a reference to an ancestor saying that he was 'Surgeon to the Garrison' in Hull in 1744. Are there any military records I could look him up in? How would I go about finding out more about this?
Most grateful for any help.

Most army records start 15-20 years later. You could check:
 the London Gazette archives,
the National Archives Catalogue,
Hull Record Office
or look for his will.

You could also ask the NA the date of their oldest army list.

Thanks, I'll try all of those. I've actually just found a reference to someone who I think may be his father (same post, same name) in this book: English Army Lists and Commission Registers, ed. Charles Dalton, F.R.G.S. Vol. V. 1702-1707. Alas, it is a Google digitisation and the reference is very mangled. If anyone who comes across this post knows where a better digitisation might be found, please let me know!

Google often digitise their books in conjunction with archives.org

When accessing one of their books you will often find the link takes you to the html/text version. But if you click "see other formats" you will usually get the option to view in pdf and epub formats. Both can also be downloaded.

Anyway the pdf version seems pretty clear:

Spikey: aah that's fantastic, thank you! The crucial dates are now clear.
It is a great book with tons of information & should go in the resource section if it's not there already - will check & post it later if not.
eta: posted.
