Charles James Fox
« on: Friday 01 January 16 17:42 GMT (UK) »
Looking for my g.g.uncle Charles James Fox born Hereford 1869. Found him in the 1939 Register at 8, Cowbridge Road, Cyntwell, Cardiff. He is a Hotel-keeper at what looks like the Curan Arms at this address. Any information regarding both him and the Curan Arms would be very welcome.

Thank you, yes I have seen that. He was born Burghill, Herefordshire, on 21/11/1869. I am trying to find out more information regarding children and his occupation(s) before his death. Many of his family were publicans in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire so I was interested to see that he would appear to have become one as well from his 1939 address, as up to the 1911 Census he had been a Market Gardener/ Nurseryman. Is there any record of a Pub called the Curan Arms at 8, Cowbridge Road, do you know?
Many thanks for the contact.

Hi
I'm not sure how to copy a link but if you google Old Pubs of Cardiff there is a great site on facebook
of the old pubs which you may find interesting and perhaps posting a query may result in an answer regarding the Curan Arms

anything and everything to do with the village of Brithdir, near New Tredegar in Gwent.

Thanks for the link to the Facebook site. I've had a look and there's nothing on it about the Curan (should that be Curran?) Arms  but there is a picture of the Culverhouse Hotel. On the 1939 Register this is the next property along the Cowbridge Road to the Curan Arms. The Culverhouse is no longer a Hotel but is now a Carvery and, looking at it on Google Earth, the street view shows extensive carpark space either side of it, so probably the building that was the Curan Arms has been demolished. I would guess it was a shortlived small local pub that didn't survive the competition from the much larger Culverhouse next door. Pity no one remembers it, though.
Thanks to all. Regards, alastairgm

The 1939 Register has got the name wrong. I looked at the online 1937 Cardiff Trade Directory and C.J. Fox is at the Caerau Arms, Ely. Still not on the Facebook site, though.

Hi, going back to the address in your first post, the link above gives the position of cashpoints in Cyntwell, Cardiff - scroll down for the one at 8 Cowbridge Road, Cyntwell, Cardiff, as Patels Newsagents.
The next link shows the images of this property being for sale
Could this have been a pub?

Certainly looks as if it could have been a pub. How does this relate to the Culverhouse? Although maybe the Caerau Arms being next to the Culverhouse in the 1939 Register doesn't necessarily mean it was next to it on the ground. Very interesting though; thankyou.
