National Fire Service - Bury 1942

Hi. I'm new here so please be gentle. My grandfather was a member of the National Fire Service in Bury during WW2. He was killed during the fire at the Castle Armoury in December 1942 and awarded a couple of posthumous bravery awards which I found when I was sorting out my fathers estate following his death in 2014. I was wondering if any of you folks could possibly shed some light on the event above. Thanks in advance

Perhaps there would be more information at the museum or at Bury Archives - local paper maybe.

The   Manchester Evening News - Wednesday 30 December 1942 has a photograph of Walter Sunderland, and a list of the injured together with a report on the explosion. The explosion was heard 15 miles away, Walter was working inside the building when the exlosion occurred and received such severe injuries that he died almost immediately.
