Hi Cullen

Just scrolled through the 1841 for Southover, and although there are 3 Richardson Families, non meet your criteria.

Will now have a look in the 1841 for Iford

Hi again

The 1841 census for Iford is only 18 pages long.

Came across 5 different entries for Richardson Surname before I spotted this:-

HO107/ 1113/ Sched 4/ Page 4 - Iford Street, Iford

RICHARDSON Thomas, 66, Ag Lab
....................  Elizabeth, 26, Female Servant
....................  William, 5

All born in county of Sussex

Ag labs did not have servants, so would assume that Elizabeth was a servant elswhere in Iford.

Chris,

You are amazing, this certainly looks OK for the william I am looking for.
I agree that Elizabeth must be a servant for someone else and there were one or two 'big houses' in Iford around that time.
This is also - I hope - the william you found a baptism for in Southover on your latest trip to the ESRO.
I am not worried that Thomas was his father as he was later 'adopted' by Richard Simmons and i recon he gave his fathers name as Richard for his marriage.
I just have to check now that there wasn't a Williasm born to Thomas and Elizabeth in Iford - I can do that as I have the PR's already

Many thanks

Hi again Kay

Thanks for the compliments  ;D, keep them coming, I like it 8)

As a matter of curiousity, I had a look in the 1851 for Iford to see if they appear there - they do, but seperated as follows:-

HO107/ 1643/ Folio 793/ Page 10 - Oat Lands, Iford

In the household of Frances Hurley, Annuitant

RICHARDSON William, Serv, Unm, 15, Houseboy, born Southover.

HO107/ 1643/ Folio 795/ Page 26 - Iford Street, Iford

In the household of Richard Simmons and Family

RICHARDSON Thomas, Father in Law, wid, 77, retired ag Lab, born Street

SIMMONS Richard, Head, marr, 32, Ag lab, born Framfield
..............  Elizabeth, wife, marr, 38, born Iford
..............  Samuel, son, unm, 6, born Iford
..............  Edwin, son, unm, 4, born Iford
..............  Elizabeth, dau, unm, 11months, born Iford

So it looks as though the 1841 entry was Father, Daughter and Grandson

Chris,

That further piece of info has been under my nose for about 4 years - without me realising the two were connected.
I knew Richard Simmons married Elizabth Richardson, infact I have the marriage cert but I had always had a problem connected an 'adopted son' with Richard Simmons. I am beginning to think that William Richardson was born out of wedlock and that Richard adopted him when he married Elizabeth - it could even be his son! but we will never know now.

Many thanks for all your help.
