« on: Sunday 10 January 16 17:08 GMT (UK) »
Photographer:  Howie Jnr. (James Howie Junior)
Location: 60 Princes Street, Edinburgh
Date of photograph: serial number '36191' - most likely Q2 1878
(see http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/PP_D/pp_howie_junior_cartes_de_visite_-_dating_of_photographs.htm#back)
I have uploaded this photo to try and help anyone else who may want to date a Howie Jnr photo.

Unknown man.  If anyone can guess an age for him, I would very much appreciate it!
Yes, It's likely to be a Frisken or near relative again.

Thank you for all your help and the very good information on these pages!

I would have said early 1880s but what do I know...I would guess he was in his early 20s.

An undated MIP card makes this pre 1880.Square corners pre. 1875 although you may see a few a bit later.
So unless there's evidence this is 1878 I would have to go with early-mid decade.

I had found the dating resource (in my first post) on the edinphoto website and done a quick calculation to make the estimate of 1878.  The edinphoto site apparently used info in a reply from the "Vistorian Image Collection" (I assume now the cartedevisite.co.uk website?):
No.  32269      1876, July 24
No.  36581      1878, August

Does that make sense?  It's possible I've misunderstood  :)

Thanks for the age estimate Carol.  I hope one day I'll get better at this aspect of dating photos!

You've not misunderstood.
What's been done is that 2 photos with proven dates have been used to calculate a card with a number between those. I've done this myself.
1878 it is then.

I would say about 1845. This photographer had a studio about that time.

Hi!  I've looked over all the information I could find about the James Howie line of photographers, and I can't see a reference to any of them running their business from the address of 60 Princes Street.  If you do have a reference I would be interested to read it.

Not 1845.
The only type of photo available at that time was the daguerreotype.
This isn't one of those.
