Hello Mike

Just received from the Alberta Archives the copy of Frederick's death registration.

The record indicates Frederick born April 17,1899 Leyton,Essex,England
Father Arthur Albert Rolfe
Mother Martha Jane Nicholls
Lived in Canada 25 years that indicates he came to Canada in 1927.
Lived in Alberta for 10 years.

I will put this in the mail to you. So you have proof that this is indeed your ancestor.

That's him. That's the Fred I have in my tree.  I think you may have just proved the link to my Great Grandparents.

Two things still puzzle me though.

Why is the DOB Barnardos have so different and the Barnardos Fred arrived in 1912, for sure.  It's a shame there is no next of kin given as I believe it would have been my Grandmother who would have been listed as Florence Reid, that would have been decisive.

Thank you so much for your help.  That was more than I expected from the record.

The information you had from Barnardos said "There are no parents or other family members recorded on file" which gets me wondering where their birth information came from.

As for the difference in dates of emigration, it's possible the person filling out the death registration didn't know when Fred came to Canada or Fred lived elsewhere then returned to Canada in 1927.

If Arthur is father why not mention older brother George Albert?
Believe he married Dec 1920 to Josephine Olive Amos and died 8 July 1964 at Hackney Hospital London.  Lived at 34 Fairmead House Marsh Hill London.

@cosmac, while I'm waiting for more documentation to arrive on Fred I thought I pursue George.  Can I ask why you suspect Josephine as a likely marriage in 1920 in London, City?  Looking on Ancestry & FamilySearch there is also a George A Rolfe & Mary Slater marrying in 1919 in West Ham.  Also a George A Rolfe marrying a Lillian Pollard in 1929 in West Ham, but I'm guessing that could be a second marriage of either of the first two candidates.  I'm also guessing I'm going to need yet another visit to the GRO website to resolve the question!

I think I might have answered my own question.  I have just gained access to the 1939 Register on FindMyPast and have found the following couple living in Poplar.

George Albert (A) Rolfe   31 Oct 1894   Male      Builders Labourer
Mary   Rolfe            25 Mar 1896   Female   Unpaid Domestic Duties

The next closest match living in Finsbury is:

George A Rolfe      17 Dec 1895   Male      Lift Man
Josephine O Rolfe   08 Apr 1892   Female   House Duties

The 1901 & 1911 census's give an estimated DOB or 1894 and there is a matching marriage for George and Mary Slater in West Ham so I'm inclined to go with the first.
