William Radley O'Connor Sailed to Sydney in 1884
« on: Thursday 21 January 16 22:37 GMT (UK) »
William and his wife Mary sailed to Sydney from London in either December 1884 or January 1885.  William was from Dublin and a member for the Dublin Fire Brigade and had 7 Children only one was born in Ireland - Thomas and christened in St Michael and St Johns RC Church.  They may have left Australia for America and then returned to Australia.  Is anybody familiar with these names?  I do not have any of the other childrens names. Thank you

Hi duffyfarrell,
Do you have more info about them such as birthdate and parents and Mary's maiden name?

Here's a real longshot  ;D ;D  There are many articles about a Captain William R O'Connor who was master of the Illawarra steam ship company.   He was born in Wexford Ireland and his wife was Mary O'meara.
Here is death notice for his wife Mary http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article139782615

His brother James O'Connor KC was appointed Solicitor General of Ireland http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article111293935 and died http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article28035420

Well there is lots more about this man but as I said it is quite a long shot and quite a change of occupation :)

regards,
   Ros

adding : I think we can scrap this long shot as there is a marriage between a William O'CONNOR and a Mary O'MEARA in Sydney in 1902

When was Thomas, son of William O'CONNOR and Mary, christened in St Michael and St Johns RC Church?

Where were the other children born?

Where is Thomas in birth order in this family?

At 1884-1885 they brought seven children with them to Sydney.......and no more born after this time?

Hi Everybody,

All I know is William Radley O'Connor to Australia with his family in 1884 from london (no record found), However it may not have been his first trip there as I found a letter recently but do not have it in my possession (am waiting on a copy), in it he is writing home to my Grand Father (Francis McCarthy) in Dublin  to say he had arrived safely in the US from Australia, he had only brought his wife and 4 of the 7 children with him the passage cost 500 dollars and they went via the Pacific Ocean to  San Francisco.   This had been his second trip to the US from Australia and it is quite possible that the 3 children left behind were old enough to look after themselves or could have been married.  I have no other information at all, but as the tradition in Irish families is to pass names down I was hoping somebody had a william Radley in their family trees.  I will look up the Mary Abbot because that could be a lead.  I have no idea of who williams parents were, although they were said to have lived near the St Michaels & St Johns church.  Thanks again every body.

Hi Wilsy,

Thanks for those records look up, Think I will be occupied for a few weeks just looking at them.  I had not come across the Irish Genealogy site before so am loving it.

I am not sure about the O'connor/Abbott so have to look into it a bit more.
