Daniel McLoughlin / McLaughlin - sentenced in Donegal 1840
« on: Monday 25 January 16 02:19 GMT (UK) »
Goodness me, I need some help please.  Not only will I be forever grateful but so will my family if they don't have to listen to my grumbling  :).   Can anyone help with parents' names and town/village for

DANIEL MCLOUGHLIN (name changed to McLaughlin sometime after arriving in Australia.
Born 1822 (but possibly 1820 or 1821)
Sentenced on 14 March 1840 to 10 years transportation to Australia for stealing a cow.
Standing convict no. 40-1713.
He was 18 years old when sentenced, Catholic and a farm labourer (ploughs).
He was held in Kilmainham Prison then transported to Australia on the ship "Pekoe" which arrived in Australia in 1840 with the ship's master being Sampson Keene.
The only place referred to in Ireland for Daniel is Donegal and I don't know if this refers to the town or the county.

In Australia, Daniel

Married Catherine Galloway on 30 May, 1848 in the early Catholic Church in Berrima, NSW.
Died 16 January 1888 at Gundary, New South Wales
Buried 17 January 1888 at Bungonia Cemetery, Bungonia, New South Wales.

I am more than happy to share what information I have about Daniel.

Thank you in advance
Wendy Fuller
(Daniel's Great-Great Grand Daughter)

Hi,
I noticed you have a tree in Ancestry.
You have Helen Dougherty as Daniel's Mother and John as his Father.
I looked for the ship records. The record book leaving Ireland. Underneath Daniel's name is a Patrick Dougherty aged 42, sheep stealing. Is this Helen's brother?

Hi Maggsie,

Thank you so much for your reply.

Helen Dougherty and John are my "possibles" for Daniel's parents but I seem to be at a dead end for proving it.

Those details about Patrick Dougherty you found might be a clue and I'll follow that up.

Thank you again for the time you've spent helping me out.  I really appreciate it!!!

In Irish records you should probably be searching for Ellen rather than Helen but unfortunately Doherty and McLaughlin (with variations) are 2 of the most common surnames in Donegal.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you very much, Aghadowey.  Your hint about Ellen instead of Helen is very valuable.  Added to Maggsie's hint about Patrick Dougherty might be a great help for me.  I had no idea about these two surnames being so common.  Family history isn't meant to be easy, I suppose.... (say me laughing and sighing at the same time, hahaha).

Thanks again for your help!!!

Hi Rathmore!

Thank you kindly for your help!

The Free Pages site looks very promising and I'll work my way through it.  Unfortunately, the Daniel McLoughlin on the Find My Past site that I think you are referring to isn't my Daniel.  Mine was transported in 1840  for 10 years and so couldn't have been in the British Army Service in 1842.

Thanks again for the Free Pages hint and for helping me out,

Wendy
