Windows 10 upgrade
« on: Monday 25 January 16 14:09 GMT (UK) »
I run Windows 7 Home premium at the moment and am keen to update and upgrade to Windows 10wjile it is still free.
However, I still  run one or two quite old programmes, eg Family Tree Maker 9.0 and Office '97 both of which I use a lot and are vital. I keep all my ancestors on Excel databases.
I do have up to date antivirus, spam detection etc.

As I am not at all technical I am anxious in case something goes wrong as I don't think I have sufficient know-how to put it right.

Any help and advice very welcome.

Office 97 is reported to work on windows 10.

I would have thought that it is highly unlikely that Family Tree Maker 9.0 (very old) would work. If you do a google search you may be able to find if someone has attempted it.

Have you established that your pc is capable of running windows 10? That would be your first step.

Hi

I up graded from Win.7 to Win. 10. I was running Family Tree Maked 2005 and it works perfectly.
I had Microsoft Office 2007 and all the office programs continued to work well after the upgrade. If you don't like 10 you can always revert back to 7 or 8 which ever the case maybe.

I believe you can only revert back if it's less than a month since you upgraded to Windows 10.

If you have a very old program which you still use, why not instal VM ware or another free virtual machine  (on the virtual machine instal an operating system that is suitable for your program, e.g. XP Vista or 7 etc, perhaps even older system) and use the virtual machine to run the old program and that only.

What exactly are the advantages of Windows 10?
I tend to live by the maxim "If it ain't bust don't fix it".

Depending on which version of Windows currently in use, Internet Explorer is to be phased out with no support.
Support for the older Windows operating systems will likewise have limited support.
Microsoft in their wisdom are pushing Windows 10 even if you don't want it by downloading files without your knowledge!

Thank you Redroger - I did however say I wasn't at all technical and this scares me.
On second thoughts I might go along with what bradburyd says and stay where I am - after all Windows 7 isn't that old.
I've been looking into this a little further and my version  of FTM is 2001 and I can't see it working in Windows 10.
