Finding 'Skene'
« on: Saturday 06 February 16 09:26 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find any information on William James Skene and his family, he was my Great Uncle, William was born in 1903 in Maryculter, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and died in 1944, in Japan, he had a wife Gertrude Emma Sayer born 1919 Manitoba, Cananda. they married in 1941 in Christchurch Winnipeg, Canada. I know they had a daughter. I have all the info I can find on William but nothing on his wife or daughter, not even deaths, unsure as to whether Gertrude married again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Regards
FDH

Hi FDH,

Hopefully the daughter is still a living person and RootsChat has a "no living person policy" - if she is not deceased you should remove her name.

Canada Voters List shows Gertrude (widow) living at 89 Harriett Street Manitoba in 1945 - also living at the same address Mr and Mrs Edward Huff -
Of course Gertrude Skene could have remarried - Canada does not have a BMD Index and also has very strict privacy laws -  as a guide BMD Records are only available for births more than a 100 years ago, marriages 85 years ago which will make the search for Gertrude Skene difficult.

1921 census for St Clements Municipality Springfield Manitoba could show a possibility for Gertrude.  Perhaps it is possible to try and trace the parents, in the hope of finding an obituary which would mention the married name of Gertrude.

Alexander Sayer  44 Flora Sayer  30
Russell Sayer  7 George Sayer  5
Valentine Sayer  3 Gertrude Sayer  2

Parents married 18 February 1915 St Clem, Manitoba, Canada - Alexander Sayer and Flora Lambert.  (Maiden surname Kennedy)

Father of Flora Kennedy/Lambert/Sayer

Flora Kennedy/Lambert/Sayer was an organist at St. Judes Anglican Church Grand Marais

Canada Voters List shows Mrs Flora Sayer a widow living Springfield Manitoba in 1949 with Monty Sayer (fisherman) and Russell Sayer (labourer)

Winnipeg Free Press March 14, 1960

Very short announcement of the marriage of J. daughter of the late Wm. Jas. Skene and Mrs. Harry Whittaker of Toronto.
Marriage took place at Carswell? Air force base in Texas-Feb 16. They don't mention the groom's name, though!
