rubbish at geography ... Wandsworth
« on: Sunday 07 February 16 14:31 GMT (UK) »
???  I have found a Great Aunt living in the Wandsworth Union Infirmary (Workhouse Infirmary) on the 1911 census.
Her Daughter died in 1912 and her POD is shown as Wandsworth - and there is a death that fits her Mother, Ellen too in 1912, but the registration district is shown as Uxbridge - do you think this could be her, please?
Ellen Weeks (nee Vigers) - born 1845 Exmouth - her POB is incorrectly transcribed as DERBY on the census, but it's clearly Exmouth on the original.
Many Thanks

Uxbridge and Wandsworth are on opposite sides of London, the first in North London and the second in South.  Not geographically close.

That doesn't mean that the death reg in Uxbridge is the wrong one, though - did your Great Aunt have any other relatives living in London that she might have moved to stay with after the death of her daughter?

I thought as much ..

No (not that I am aware of anyway).  Ellen was in the Workhouse  on the 1911 census and he Daughter died in 1912, so I'd have thought if she ha other family, she'd be with them in 1911 .. but you can never rule this out.

There are no registered deaths for an Ellen Weeks in Wandsworth that would fit ....  :-\

I take it back .... Ellen also had a Son, Henry (Harry) and in 1911 he was living at 28 Gordon Dwellings, Datchelor Place, Camberwell - that's close(ish) - right ?  ::)

His occupation was a horsekeeper for London CC

No Camberwell  is not close to Uxbridge  ;)

Uxbridge registration district and Wandsworth are really on the west side of London.  Uxbridge district sits mainly to the north/north east of Heathrow airport.  Wandsworth is south west London.  I don't consider that they are that far apart. The registration district of Brentford sits between them.

You can get some idea of which places are covered  by the RD's here

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/wandsworth.html

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/brentford.html

I would suggest looking at a map for some of the places mentioned  :)

Don't forget that deaths are registered in the district where someone dies which is not necessarily where they were living at the time.  She may just have been visiting in the area

You could try the looking at the Swaffield Road Workhouse creed registers on ancestry (London Poor Law records), see if you can find Ellen in them.
