Thomas Hawthorne
« on: Tuesday 09 February 16 08:21 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find death information for a Thomas Hawthorn. I think that he died in 1910, but I want to confirm the information.  I know that his wife, Dora Hawthorne nee Mick, died on February 11, 1920. This is her obituary:

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=AS19200212.2.105&cl=CL2.1920.02.12&e=-------10--1----0--

She's buried in Waikaraka Cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand.

They were married in Canada in 1866 and emigrated to New Zealand sometime after that.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

According to New Zealand BDM, the death of a Thomas Hawthorne, aged 88, was registered in 1914 - reference 1914/4263. It is possible to obtain a copy certificate.

Hello...

Was Thomas also known as James?

1914/4263 - HAWTHORNE, Thomas - 88Y - d.o.d 20 July 1914

----

Sharing the same plot at Waikaraka Cemetery

Name: HAWTHORN, JAMES (note no E in HAWTHORNE)
Details: M
Died: 20-07-1914
Aged: 88
Place: Waikaraka
Location: Area 3 Block 4 Lot No 70a

Name: HAWTHORNE, DORA
Details: F
Died: 11-2-1920
Aged: Unknown
Place: Waikaraka
Location: Area 3 Block 4 Lot No 70b

Death Notice for Thomas HAWTHORN

I think it says "d/b/h/o Dora HAWTHORN late of Mercury Bay"... it's a bit hard to read.

---

If you do purchase a certificate specify a printout, not an actual certificate.

A printout is a scan of the register. Occasionally a printout contains info not transcribed onto the certificate. Also, a printout can be emailed to you.

Best of all it's $20 for a printout as opposed to $26 for a certificate.

Regards
Beg

Thanks so much for the information, particularly the obituary. As far as I know, his name was just Thomas Hawthorn, but James could have been a middle name or another name that he was known by.  He could have started using James after emigrating. This is his baptism:

The name James may be why couldn't find him in the death records.

In 1879, the death of Thomas, son of Thomas Hawthorne, Bay of Islands, aged 19 years.

This was the accident?

Slowly recovering-

Very curious. The newspaper reports the death as occurring on 5.6.1879. The only Hawthorne/Hawthorn death registered for that year was for a Maurice Hawthorne, also aged 19 years, but his date of death was 6.9.1879.  ???

The Thomas Hawthorn aged 19 would have been from a different family. The Thomas Hawthorn that emigrated to New Zealand married in Canada in 1866 and emigrated in 1867. As far as I know, Thomas and Dora - also known as Dorothy - had two daughters: Catherine St. George Hawthorn, born in 1867 at sea and Margaret Rose Ann born in 1870 in New Zealand.

The St. George in Catherine St. George Hawthorn's name comes from the ship that she was born on - the S.S. St. George.
