Mary Jane Tilley /Tilly c1876 Gateshead Durham
« on: Tuesday 09 February 16 14:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I would be very grateful if anyone is able to find out more info on the parents of my GGM Mary Jane Tilley / Tilley. I have found 3 possibles as follows:

a) Mary Jane Tilly
Reg 1878  Jan Feb Mar
Dist  Gateshead  County Durham
10a  863

b) Mary Jane Tilley
Reg 1877 July Aug September
Dist Gateshead, County Durham
10a 907

c) Mary Jane Tilley
Reg 1876 Jan Feb Mar
Dist Gateshead, County Durham
10a 969

One of these married Thomas Atthey in 1903 Jan Feb Mar in Gateshead Durham 10a 1123. Links are Ryton, Tanfield and Greenside. I’m doubtful which one she is and I’m about to order all four GRO certs, but as great people on here have helped in the past I thought I’d try here first and see if magic happens again! Thanks in advance, C

I'd start with her marriage cert. Then you will see the name of her father, and you may be able to find your girl on 1881/91/01 censuses with her parents, so you then wont need to spend out on any more certs.

Have you found your one on 1911 after her marriage?

I would say this is the most likely one, based on birthplace given on later census

But getting her marriage cert to conform father is Edward would be a good idea

Ann 27 bn Woodside Ryton

I had thought she was born to Edward Tilley and Ann Atkinson. However they died at the address 6 Green’s Cottages West Ryton and I found a burial for a Mary Jane Tilley, of 6 Green's Cottages, West Ryton, age: 75, SPINSTER. Now Edward had a brother Robert who also had a daughter of the same name and age. Could this MJ have then moved in with her uncle Edward when Robert died and Edwards girl had gone as married? Given the 3rd possibility I am confused. I found the 1911 census as married and she puts Emmaville (Crawcrook / Ryton) and birth abt 1878. I think I’ll buy the marr cert. Thank you.

The single one can be seen with parents Robert and Hannah.

So the married one must be either the dtr of Edward and Ann, or the (currently unknown) third one.

And here we are :

The third one did not live to adulthood

Death
Oct/Nov/Dec 1880
Gateshead
ref 10a 523
Mary Jane Tilley
age 3

So, your one must be the child of Edward and Ann!

Thanks all. I'm hoping it's Edward and Ann as my current tree will be a pain to sort!!! I'm still puzzled by the address of the spinster MJ being the same as Edward and Ann's death place. But it's good to rule out the other poor mite. Edward and Ann had a son Matthew on the 1911 census for the same address and maybe if he was gone in some way (I couldn't find anything more on him) maybe they left the house to their niece. Yup, I think the marr cert is needed!
