Re - Battsons of Upminster
« on: Friday 19 February 16 20:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi all I'm new to this, so please excuse my ignorance.

I was wondering if anyone has any information on the Battsons of Upminster. my Nan was Margaret Eleanor Battson, who married a Albert Edward Griffin. All I know about my nans parents is they were Church wardens at St Marys South Ruislip - Ernest Battson and Elsie May (maiden name Drew) didn't know anything about what they did.

I believe but not sure that Ernest Battsons Father was Ernest William Battson and his wife was Alice Eleanor (maiden name spooner I think.)

then I think my great great great grandfathers name was Edwin Battson, his father was Isreal Walter Battson. I think.  but I don't have dates etc was wondering if anyone had info on what they did etc, any info would be great.

I think Edwin Battson was a pork butcher and diary farmer not sure if this is one and the same, I think this because I have a copy of a will with white writing written on black paper.

can anyone tell me more. fingers crossed

Hi and a warm welcome to Rootschat!

What is the source of the info you have?  To be sure of the facts you really need to confirm each stage as you go, with things like a marriage cert (that will show fathers name) or a birth cert (will show parents names) or a sighting on a census etc.

www.freebmd.org has the indexes or births marriages and deaths, to view at no cost.
To order certs go to www.gro.gov.uk , £9-25 each

But before you spend any money, lets see if we can work backwards

Marriage
Jul/Aug/Sep 1919
West Ham
ref 4a 417
Ernest Battson / Elsie M Drew

So you are confident these are correct as your great grandparents?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

IF the marriage cert confirms that Ernest's dad is indeed Ernest, and if occupations/addresses/witnesses etc add any further confirmation, then you may find that this is the family in 1901

1901
47 Millais Road Leyton
Ernest Battson 30 rail engine stoker bn Upminster
Alice E 31 bn Wickford
Ethel 9 bn Ramsden Boys
Ernest 6 bn Witham
Alice 3 bn Brentwood
Edwin W 1 bn Leyton

so they moved around a bit!

Ernest (6)'s birth cert would confirm Alice's maiden name - but this looks like the marriage -

Jul/Aug/Sep 1893
Billericay
ref 4a 585
Ernest Battson / one of the possible brides Alice Eleanor Spooner

Again the marriage cert would confirm Ernests father

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I think you would need the marriage cert for Ernest Battson and Elsie may drew as I can't find it on the parish registers. Have searched Leytonstone (where she lived in 1911), West Ham, East ham, leyton, little Ilford, stratford, forest gate, wanstead, walthamstow so far.
Yet to check Woodford, canning town, plaistow.

I tried the last three parishes above. No marriage. Could it have been a registry office or not c of e? Or have I missed some parishes in West Ham? I did try forest gate too.
However 1911 census has them living in parallel roads in leyton ... Millais and leslie?

Did find the Ernest william battson marriage to alice Eleanor spooner. He was 23 and a fireman living in witham. His father is Edward batson, not edwin and he was a dairyman. She was living in ramsden crays which is where marriage is 10/8/1893. Her father was george and he was a farmer. Witnesses were george spooner and Edith fanny battson (who is his sister on 1881 census). Father's name is edwin on this census.

Can't find a baptism for any of your battsons in upminster, Cranham or hornchurch. Did find Israel and sarah steels marriage in upminster in 1838.

Assuming that your names are right (which it looks like you'll have to confirm with that first marriage cert from 1919, unless you want to go along with what looks likely from the 1911 census), Israel Waller (not Walter) born 8/7/1819 to benjamin Batt (name changes to battson at israel's baptism) and Mary Waller (who married in upminster 29/4/1802). Israel's siblings: mary Anne 4/3/1803, Andrew 24/12/1804, benjamin 4/4/1808, william 19/7/1811, caroline 13/6/1823. Big gap between william and Israel. Maybe they moved for a while as benjamin was a labourer?

If your nan's parents were Ernest and Elsie, then she was my dad's cousin.  Ernest's youngest brother was Frederick, my granddad.
Their parents, Ernest Battson and Alice Spooner were actually cousins.  Alice's mum, Rebecca, was Edmin's older sister (definitely Edwin!), both children of Israel.  Israel was a farmer in Upminster.
Did your nan have a brother and sister?
