On behalf of a contact I am trying to determine whether or not this may be her ancestor.

Have you tried looking for George THOMAS

Easy to get the order of two surnames wrong when converting aural to written ?

Do you have any likely districts?

I have found cemeteries seem to have records of deaths  which I cannot find on NZBDM and vice versa and this does not seem to always be an indexing problem
