James Gallacher Ann Cunningham
« on: Thursday 25 February 16 16:12 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate the Irish side of my mothers family in Donegal and have hit the proverbial brick wall. My grandfather was born in Donegal (somewhere, and went to Scotland)to James Gallacher (B: 1810 approx.)and Ann Cunningham. I have searched for the parish but have no idea where to start as there has been nothing passed down or anything about then except on death cert from John Gallacher. any help to start would be appreciated
Thank you
Aynn

Ok, Hi,
Did they marry in Ireland before moving to Scotland?
Were any children born in Ireland?
Ancestry is down just now.

You may struggle finding anything in Ireland. Few, if any, RC parishes in Donegal have any records prior to about 1850.

One possible source is to check with the Poor Law records in Scotland to see if they made a claim. If they did, it often gives the applicants parish in Ireland and sometimes next of kin. Poor Law records for the Glasgow area are in the Mitchell Library.

Maggsie: John and Ann were married and live in Ireland although there is evidence that he was present at Grandson James birth in Duntocher, James and Ann Had John Gallacher (not sure of  siblings) John married Ellen McGinley in Ireland they left due to the Famine (from what I have been told) John and Ellen had 6 children Ann, Patrick, James, Charles, Michael and John*. John (My great Grandfather married Margaret McAllister and they had 8 children John (died in infancy) Ellen, Margaret, Jane, Patrick, Elizabeth(my Grandmother) Joseph and another John. this is as far as I can get for some reason The town of Toame in Ireland has come up through another relative's search, but again I can not get any further.  If you can give me any ideas it would be appreciated.
Thank you

Hi,
I have picked up a Birth in 1803 for James, also his sister in 1801 and also their parents marriage in 1800.
I will send a Private Message as I need to send my email address.
I have also got most of the births, 10 pages in all.
Do you have a tree in Ancestry? I saw one named "LUX" please let me know.
I will send a PM now.

This is a very long shot, I know ;) but in my defence, I am really struggling with this part of the family.

I am looking for information on a James Gallagher, carpenter journeyman who had a son Joseph in March or May 1887.   I have this information from Joseph's marriage certificate and his Royal Flying Corps records, hoping he told the truth on both occasions!

I have no idea where either of these was born and been unable to find the Gallagher family in the 1891, 1901 or 1911 England censuses.

Joseph married in England in 1918 and soon after left his wife and daughter and no information has been passed down the family.

I have found a census record (1901 Donegal) of a James Gallagher who was a carpenter.  No Joseph in the household but if this is the family he would have been 14yrs and could well have been elsewhere.

Although there are lots of Gallaghers, I am struggling to find a James who is a carpenter.

I would be very interested if any of this fits with your Gallachers.  A long shot I know...

Kind regards

Hi Maggsie

No 89314 - 2nd air mechanic - Royal Air Force (mechanical engineer) is what is says on the marriage certificate.  This number is right - that what it says on his RFC/RAF records.  And the age on the marriage certificate (31 years) fits with the d.o.b. on the RFC info (either 7 Mar or May 1887 - difficult to decipher).

I have had no luck with trying to find anything about his pension.  I reckon that the only way I am going to find out anything more about the Gallaghers is if someone else is researching this line and shares info with me.  But I keep trying!

Kind regards
