where was Piggots Village, Culross?
« on: Monday 29 February 16 20:57 GMT (UK) »
I have “Piggots Village, parish of Culross” named in an 1866 birth record.
Believe it  was only later in1891 that Culross became part of Fife. But I have faith that the
good folk of Fife (who have been so helpful in the past) will be able to answer this one :-)
The father William Gilfillan was a coal miner.  On the same page  I see Alexander Jamieson (who also had a child that year)  was an 'Overseer at Colliery'' and also lived at Piggots Village.  Have been looking at  maps.nls.uk ... Ordnance Survey Maps - 25 inch 1st edition,  Scotland, 1855-1882. Cannot find Piggots Village - or maybe I missed it.  Have searched internet too , can find no mention. Would like to locate on a map. Thanks...

Hi winnie7

Is the writing clearly 'Piggotts Village' on the cert? Like you, struggle to see anything.

This is a good source for place names for Culross (and elsewhere in Scotland) www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/place-names/Culross?class=parish&county=Perthshire Nothing even close showing there  :-\

There is nothing on the 1861/71 censuses with that in the address line either that I could see.

Christina, who was born in 1866, had a younger sister Elizabeth didn't she who also shows on the 1871 census as being born in Culross. Do you know where she was born?

Not sure it helps as this stage but this is a list of the coal mines in operation in Scotland in 1866 www.scottishmining.co.uk/Indexes/ListMines1866.html

Hi MonicaL- yes very clearly on the certificate - "PIggots Village, parish of Culross"
Have scoured various websites already... so the mystery remains to be solved.

Yes I concur the birth clearly shows this place name.

However, I looked in the Valuations ('65 & '75), the maps and even the NAS and see no mention of this place and conclude it must be the name of a Tenement or other Dwelling associated with the Colliery. To bad neither your family nor Jamieson stayed around for '71 Census, you would know the mine and perhaps the dwellings.

I have turned off all email notifications, thank you.

May or may not be relevant but this link connects to the Valleyfield Estate (Sir Robt Preston) next village to Culross & Pigott family.  http://pigott-gorrie.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/pigott-family-of-dysart-queens-county.html

Worth looking in the area of the Valleyfield Estate perhaps?

Scotland, Perthshire/Glasgow:  Stewart
England, Devon/Cornwall: Ferris, Gasser/Jasser/Jesser, Norman

Are the family on census 1871 or 1881?

Fifer, with your mention of Valleyfield, this looks to be one of the 3 coal mines in Perthshire,  mentioned in the 1866 report on the Scottish mining site earlier.

Perthshire
1 Comrie Dumblane Forth Iron Company.
2 Overton    Culross John Watson, Junior.
3 Valleyfield Culross Carron Iron Company.

Maybe Piggots Village was a local name given to land/housing connected to the Valleyfield estate?
