Stag Inn, Ashton under Lyne?
« on: Friday 04 March 16 13:38 GMT (UK) »
Hey guys, i have a relative who was a servant at a Stag Inn, 82 Warrington St, Ashton Under Lyne in the 1911 census. I have tried searching for any old pictures or information of the pub with what i have but i cant find any pictures or anything to say it even existed! Has anybody come a cross it before or know where i may find it, there are so many pictures of pubs around the area  that i cant find but i havnt found any that even match to the address.

I understand there was most probably a name change and from what i can tell the street is now part of the town center/market but id love to be able to place it! i have found pubs on the stretch at number 2, 13 and 109 not 82 x Tia x

From A Directory of Ashton Pubs by R McGee
STAG INN 80,82 Warrington Street
A beerhouse with a wine licence which stood on the north-east corner of Gosford Street, at the end of Warrington Street and almost in Boston Street. It was owned by James Hulme and others 1861-89 then John Hulme, who lived at Boston House, 1891-1898. He sold out to the Stamford Brewery Company in Portland Street and this company merged with the Whitefield Brewery Company in 1899. JWLees acquired the Stag in 1905, when the Whitefield Brewery was wound up. The stag referred for compensation in February 1927 and closed on 14th January
James Marsden was landlord from 1907-1912.
Unfortunately there isn't a picture in the book

Heather.

Thankyou so much guys you have both helped immensely!Heather- James Marsden was on the 1911 census so that information is correct, both that information with the map has enabled me to pin point where it was, sadly it is slap bang where Natwest is in the market place so it did get demolished. Thankyou both :) x

It has been demolished but it wasn't where the Natwest is now. It was near to where the Arcades shopping centre is. If you look on the map, Water Street is still there (baths) and that led onto Gosford Street.
