Eliza Jane Cooke nee Short - The Missing Years after 1885
« on: Friday 11 March 16 09:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi!  I'm hoping someone out there has better detective skills than me!

I have been trying to find out about my relative Eliza Jane Short, born 1855 in Islington to parents George Short and Phebe Short nee Jenkins.  I have had no trouble at all tracing the lives of her 2 sisters Naomi and Julia, nor her 2 half siblings Henry and Amelia.

She married Harry Cooke in 1885 in Islington at the age of 30.

I found Eliza buried in New Southgate Cemetery in a grave with other family members, and the inscription states:

Eliza Jane Cooke who entered into rest 11 February 1902 at the age of 46

No sign of Harry in the same grave.

Looking on Ancestry, FindMyPast and Family Search I have located her birth in 1855 and her marriage in 1885.

However, I cannot locate her death in 1902 (nor a year either side), nor Eliza & Harry in the 1891 and 1901 Census returns, trying all sorts of name variations.

I have no idea when Harry was born (unless I purchase the marriage cert which I might well have to at this rate), nor when he died.

I cannot find them on any passenger lists going abroad.

Can anyone help track them down after their marriage and find her death record???

Many thanks,

Nina

There's a death registration for Eliza Cook aged 46 in Woolwich RD in 1Q 1902, and there's a Harry and Eliza Cooke with 3 children in Kidbrooke in the 1901 census. Kidbrooke was part of Woolwich RD.

Harry Cooke 43 Domestic Coachman born Northampton
Eliza Cooke 43 born Finsbury

Children all born "London":

George H Cooke   14 so born circa 1886
Howard C Cooke   12 so born circa 1888
Ernest W Cooke   8 so born circa 1892

1901 census RG13/563, folio 114 page 7 and 8

Hi ShaunJ - thanks for that - I had originally discounted that 1901 census entry as the dob of Eliz was 3 years out and the entire rest of her family lived north of the river, but having done some digging on the children I found that an Ernest W Cooke married in Canada in 1912 and put that his place of birth was London, 1892, and his mother was Eliza Short and father Harry Cooke!  So that makes me think you are totally right!  I will now do further digging to see if other members of their family went to Canada.

Still cannot find them on the 1891 census though!

Many thanks, Nina
