STROOD / Woolavington
« on: Tuesday 15 March 16 17:29 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if someone could check a baptism for me please?

I have an MC for Julia Hooper to Richard Burrows in Woolavington 1858.  It only shows them both as "of full age".  Julia's Father is shown as John Hooper (Labourer).

I've found a John Hooper (1806) Wife Hannah (1816) with children that would make Hannah way too young to have given birth.  I know the dates of birth are rounded up/down on the 1851 census and have found a Marriage entry for a Hannah STROOD  to John Hooper 25/4/1826 - this date would tie in with the YOB shown for the children on the census .... but not her YOB

I can't find a baptism entry for a Hannah Strood in Woolavington (or Somerset) that would fit/tie in ... ???

HELP please ?

Possibly Hannah was b c 1810 and was only 16 when she married
Age is given as 25 in 1841 which means she could be between age 25-29
Its possible she gave her age as 29 which is near enough to y.o.b. of 1810

Her p.o.b. is not necessarily Woolavington as the 1841 census just gives yes or no in answer to were they living in the county (not village ) they were born in

there is a baptism of Hannah Strowd c. the timeframe in Yeovil Somerset -but its all guesswork

Hannah appears to have been buried at Woolavington in Nov 1849, with recorded age 39. That makes marriage in 1826 and first child in 1828 more plausible. Can't see her baptism though.

Julia seems to have been born Q4 1839 but not baptised until 1846, at the same time as her brother Charles. So not really full age when she married.

so technically, the six in 1816, could have been misread and was actually a zero?

I found the other baptisms too, but wanted to count any STROODs out first before looking at the others ....

Thanks for your help. :)

More likely it is correct and she was baptised late. Note her brothers George and Vincent were baptised on the same day as each other but were different ages. There were several Charles Hoopers registered in the Bridgwater RD 1839-1846 so we can't easily tell which was the right one. However there was a Charles in the workhouse in the 1851 census who was born in Woolavington about 1843, along with Judith born Woolavington about 1839. There's only the one Judith registered 1837-1846 so she is almost certainly John and Hannah's daughter and I suspect that Charles is their son.

Hi Welshgirl

This is my family too :). I believe Hannah (Stroud) was daughter of Thomas and Mary Stroud. They had several daughters: Elizabeth (1805), Hannah (1807), Sarah (1808), Fanny (1810), Mary Ann (1811), Jane (1813), Isabella (1817), Phyllis (1819), Susanna (1823). All were baptised Moorlinch.

Either Hannah or Fanny could be the one you're looking for.

I know the dates of birth are rounded up/down on the 1851 census

No they aren't! ;D

It's the 1841 census where adult ages (i.e. 15 and over) are generally rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5 years. (And never rounded up!)

On later censuses, the age is shown as given to the enumerator.
