  My guess is that they are weavers.   Two or three of them have what look like shuttles across their laps.     I have a shuttle before me and it does look about the same length and looks much the same.

1880's & my first thought was weavers. I notice that they have nicely embroidered pinnies so maybe lace makers is an option.

A few of them do look like they are holding shuttles.

I also wondered about seeing some of them with their hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them. Could that show relationships like Father/Daughter, Mother/Daughter, or Sister/Sister? Was that common in group photos?
