Eli Wightman's Kirby-in-Ashfield's geography

Hi Wondered if anyone on here can help me with some of the places in Kirby-in-Ashfield area? I am researching Eli Wightman who in the 1901 census is living  on Sherwood Rise, Kirby-in-Ashfield. Looking at all his neighbours everyone is working as miners. Looking at a map Sherwood Rise is still in existence but seems to be in a place called Nuncargate - just south of Kirby-in-Ashfield. I wondered if Nuncargate and maybe Annersley were places that were developed just for miners? Maybe Kirby-in-Ashfield was the original town and these places were built for the mineworkers?

Here is a little bit to get you going.

Kirkby in Ashfield and the surrounding hamlets grew when the pits began to open and houses for mining families were needed to house them. Annesley and Nuncargate etc were there long before the miners arrived.

This large village and parish is on the border of Derbyshire, 133 miles north of the city of London and 10 miles north-west of Nottingham city. The parish covers about 5,800 acres and includes the hamlets of Annesley Woodhouse, East Kirkby, Kirkby Woodhouse and Nuncar Gate.

Baptism - Kirkby Woodhouse Baptist Chapel
Eli WEIGHTMAN - born 27th January 1833 - parents = James & Hannah

My 5th great-grandparents were William Weightman & Jane Chadbourne; their daughter Mary had her daughter Jane baptised at Kirkby Woodhouse Baptist Chapel.

Mary had a brother James born in 1808..... is he your Eli's father?

Thank you for that information about the developments of the area and which parts grew as a result of the mining. The Eli Wightman I am looking at in the 1901 census could well be the same man. I will have another look at the information I have and post again.

Hi Dizzifish- I have now checked backed through the research I have done and think you are right. Eli Wightman (b. 1833) does seem to be the grandson of William & Jane Wightman through  their son James who was also baptised at Kirby Woodhouse Non-Conformist Chapel(1808). Eli's family  all seem to have a long history associated with framework knitting and stayed in the Nuncargate area until later generations became miners.  Please do message me if you want any more information.
